Mount Vesuvius is a volcano in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. It is best known for its eruption in in AD 79 that caused the destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The cities were abandoned and forgotten until a chance discovery in the 18th century. It is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted in the last hundred years, although it is currently not doing so. In season two, Spartacus and the remaining freed slaves and gladiators use an abandoned temple at the base Mount Vesuvius as their new command post.
