The Unnamed Trainee is a slave purchased by Batiatus to become a gladiator.

Appearance[]

The 'Unnamed Trainee' is somewhat overweight, showing muscle in his arms but more fat in his belly. Compared to his fellow recruits, he would likely have not survived the strenuous work required to reach being a gladiator and would have fallen before or during the final test. He had short brown hair and was probably the tallest of all the men he came in with.

Personality[]

The 'Unnamed Trainee' never speaks, though shows fear (like his fellow recruits) during Oenomaus' introductory lecture. He does also show an extreme sense of silent pain after his neck is slit.

Blood and Sand[]

The 'Unnamed Trainee' arrives along with Spartacus, Varro, Kerza, Marcus and one other recruit at Batiatus' Ludus to be trained as a gladiator.

As Oenomaus arrives to instruct each man, he confronts Spartacus with his "deeds" in the arena beforehand and calls up Crixus to have a practice battle. When Spartacus hesitates to participate, Oenomaus instructs Pietros to hand him a real sword instead of a wooden one, thus giving him advantage over Crixus.

The fight is short, with Crixus easily besting the untrained and undisciplined Spartacus. Defeated, Spartacus throws his sword, only to have Crixus deflect it and send it flying... to slash the throat of the unfortunate 'Unnamed Recruit', who is standing nearby. Clutching his gushing neck, he falls to the ground, dead.

Traineedeath

Unnamed Trainee killed by Spartacus.

Enraged, Crixus charges Spartacus with intent to kill him, but Batiatus orders him spared, and Spartacus is let go to begin training.

The lifeless body of the 'Unnamed Trainee' is carried away to be disposed of, his gladiatorial career over before it could even begin.

Trivia[]

  • The role of the 'Unnamed Trainee' is not credited.
  • According the commentary for Sacramentum Gladiatorum, the actor who was supposed to portray the 'Unnamed Trainee' was unavailable for filming at the last minute, and a replacement had to step in without preparation. Despite - in the eyes of the showrunners - not quite looking the part, they praised him for helping them out of a difficult situation.
  • The unlucky 'Unnamed Trainee' has an even shorter gladiator career than 'Recruit 4', who meets a similarly accidental and untimely end during training.
