The Attack on the Mines happened sometime after the defeat of Glaber and his army. The attack was successful, with thousands of slaves freed. It was at this point the rebellion numbers exploded and went from a small band to a army.

Historically, Spartacus is unlikely to have attacked any mines in order to build or replenish his army. Most of his combatants would have been slaves already trained in combat, most likely Pastores. Pastores were slaves trained as herdsman and farmers, and trained in combat in order to protect their dominus' stock from thieves and bandits.
