Soldiers are professional warriors who serve their nation in war and battle. Most cultures don't allow women to serve, instead relying on their male population. The Latin word for soldier was Miles.
Most cultures also expect their men to serve mandatory time in the army, obliging them to remain for a set period of time before they are allowed to leave. Other cultures will expect their men to return to services when needed.
