Swords and Ashes[]

Pelorus was a former gladiator in the House of Batiatus. Pelorus was Germanic in origin, hailing from Cimbri, and was captured in the campaigns of Gaius Marius. He was purchased from the market as a boy to be a companion and sometime guardian to the young Quintus. He was granted the Rudis after saving Titus Batiatus from roadside brigands. He had many vested interests, including his ludus and the campaign of Gaius Verres for governor of Sicilia. Marcus Pelorus was holding a large party at his home when several of his slaves and gladiators - including the Getae 'witch' Medea - broke free.

During the ensuing chaos, Pelorus is stabbed to death by Medea before she and the other slaves can be subdued and imprisoned. As he was the only standing member of House Pelorus, his estate went to his rightful 'heir', which in court was proved to be that of the House of Batiatus, his former owners.

Funeral games were held in his honor at the Neapolis Arena along with the execution of his household slaves.

Trivia[]

  • As Marcus was born a member of the Germanic Cimbri tribe, he may have been enslaved by the Romans as recently as 101 BC.
