Liscus was a gladiator in Batiatus' Ludus' and later a rebel under Spartacus' command.

Appearance[]

Liscus is a Gaul with an impressive, muscular build, short black hair and a small, rough beard. He is a skilled fighter and a fierce combatant.

Personality[]

Like the other Gauls, Liscus displays recklessness prone to cynicism. He appears to be close friends with Rhaskos and Fortis as well as Tychos, and holds Crixus in very high regard.

Combat Prowess[]

Having been trained as a gladiator he is able to easily dispatch multiple trained Roman soldiers with a single-sword. His level of combat ability places him as one of the higher-tier fighters of the Rebel band.

Blood and Sand[]

While not seen, he is mentioned by Agron as one of the Gauls who were wary about joining Spartacus, Agron, Duro and Hamilcar with their plans of escape and wouldn't do so without Crixus' involvement. Liscus later joins in the rebellion after Crixus joins Spartacus. After Batiatus' death, Liscus and the rebels then leaves the House to get their revenge on Rome.

Vengeance[]

Liscus featured prominently in the days following their escape from the ludus.

With Rhaskos, Fortis, Acer and other Gauls, he is follower of Crixus. Liscus returns with the Gauls with food they stole from the Romans. When Spartacus orders them to share with the other slaves, Liscus responds with hostility, stating the house-slaves do nothing while they risk their lives. Rhaskos, however, does as Spartacus and so the Gauls reluctantly begin to hand out food.

When the Rebels begin their leave from the sewers, Agron gives orders to the slaves and Liscus mocks Agron for his attempted leadership but Crixus puts them at ease.

Liscus, along with Acer, are wounded attacking the villa where Nasir and Chadara are held. He then takes to celebrating with his fellows that night as well.

After Naevia is believed to be dead by Crixus, he goes into a sullen state and the Rebels are at one another's throats. When Spartacus attempts to calm things Liscus demands that they all hear from Crixus, who responds by saying they will all join with Spartacus.

When tensions between the Rebels arrise again as a result of Crixus learning Agron lied of Naevia's fate, Liscus is among those who choose to go with Crixus and Spartacus to the mines to rescue Naevia.

They assault the mines, but are ambushed by the forces of Gaius Claudius Glaber, led by Marcus and Ashur. Liscus manages to escape the mines with Spartacus, Mira, Nasir, Naevia, Fortis, Tychos and Sophus.

After fleeing the mines, the group manages to escape into a nearby forest, but are constantly pursued. After another bout with the Roman pursuers, Tychos is killed. Liscus expresses to Spartacus his desire to bury Tychos but approaching Romans make it impossible. Liscus states it doesn't matter anyway because they will all be dead soon regardless.

Another fight with the Romans leads to Sophus' and Nasir suffering a mortal wound. Liscus and Spartacus begin to argue with Liscus and Fortis wanting to abandon Naevia and the wounded Nasir who are slowing their escape. Spartacus refuses, instead sending Liscus and Fortis on ahead to fetch Agron and the other rebels at Vesuvius.

Fortis and Liscus become separated in the forest while trying to evade their Roman pursuers, however, and Liscus is forced to rejoin Spartacus' party.

Shortly after discovering Fortis' dead body hanging from a tree, they are ambushed by more Roman soldiers - led by Marcus and Ashur. Liscus and Spartacus fight furiously, but Liscus is stabbed in the back by Ashur during the battle.

Mortally wounded, Liscus tells Spartacus not to let their sacrifices be for nothing, then dies.

Trivia[]

Joseph Naufahu, the actor who played Liscus is 181cm tall and weighs 95kg.
Liscus seems to have the least loyalty to Crixus among the Gauls as he was quick to dismiss Crixus as dead and also did not seem to care much in saving Naevia. Nevertheless, he proves himself a great asset up until his death.
Liscus is one of many gladiators presented in Vengeance that did not appear in Blood and Sand. He was, however, mentioned.
Liscus' (played by Maori actor Joseph Naufahu) darker-complexion in comparison to other Gauls may indicate his origin from the Mediterranean region of Gaul, with membership of the Salyes or Salluvii, a tribe of mixed Celtic and Ligurian ethnicity whom dominated territory from the Rhone Valley to the western Alps within what is now Provence. Alternatively, Liscus may have been a member of one of the two branches of the Volcae in southern Gaul, namely the Tectosages (centred around Toulouse) or the Arecomici (centred around Narbonne).
Liscus is a historical name of a Vergobretus (chief magistrate) of the Gaulish Aedui tribe, as recounted in Julius Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic War.
