Appius is one of Tullius' men, overseeing some of the slaves that are working on the new arena.
Character Outline[]
Appius is a man who works for Tullius. He was a man of average build with a bald head and common clothing, carrying a club for beating slaves.
Gods of the Arena[]
Whilst Batiatus and Solonius are walking through the Capua Marketplace, they come across Crixus, then a slave of Tullius, fighting with another slave. Appius and two other men pull Crixus and the other slave apart.
Batiatus, seeing a chance to get into Tullius' good books, stops Appius from beating Crixus and offers fifty denarii for him. Appius is confused as to why Batiatus would spend so much on somebody "worth no more than ten denarii" a thought shared with Solonius. Batiatus explains that he sees promise in the slaves eyes, then asks Solonius to lend him 20 more Denarii and offers Appius an extra five for his own pocket, an offer he gladly accepts.
With this, Crixus is handed over to Batiatus. Appius exclaims that it is a "waste of coin, this shit-fuck will never be a gladiator",[1] but Batiatus thinks differently.
Trivia[]
- Appius may be a member of the Roman Gens Appia, a Plebeian clan of possible Sabine or Oscan origins within the Republic. Alternatively, Appius may be a simple praenomen (personal name).
